This is a very rare instance of an American daybed retaining much of its original leather covering and under-upholstery.

Reference: Listed in the Rhode Island Furniture Archive RIF6645. Please see Wallace Nutting Furniture Treasury, volume 1, number 1603, for a very similar form. For an armchair with the identical crest and very similar turnings please see Patricia Kane, Art & Industry in Early America: Rhode Island Furniture, 1650-1830, pages 246-248, number 42. That chair is attributed as likely Rhode Island. Another chair with the nearly identical crest is in the same book as entry 43 noted as probably Newport.
