Superb Set of Eight George II Dining Chairs
-
Description
A superb set of eight George II carved mahogany dining chairs having a carved crest rail with a pierced and carved splat, carved styles, having a drop in seat on substantial carved cabriole legs terminating in ball and claw feet. Sets of George II dining chairs of eight or more are rare, and to have a set with such assured and substantial carving is particularly uncommon. The carving of this period in English furniture is both original in subject and execution and is enhanced by the dense and rich mahogany with which the chairs are made. For collectors of English furniture, this set of chairs is from the most sought after period and of the highest quality design and execution. They are extremely fine. Provenance: Lord Hampton, Droitwich, Worcestershire. John Somerset Pakington, 1st Baron Hampton GCB, PC FRS (20 February 1799 – 9 April 1880), known as Sir John Pakington, Bt from 1846 to 1874, was a British conservative politician.
