Victorian Child's Rocking Chair. American, Circa 1875
-
Description
Lovely child's mid-Victorian hardwood rocking chair, ebonized with hand painted polychromed floral stenciling to the top back rail in colors of blue, green and red; gold line and fleur de lis design stenciling to the arms, extending to the top rail; typical of American Victorian design (see images). The front seat rail is also decorated similarly. The caned back and seat have been professionally re-done (note evidence of previous old caning-- see images); and the caning, along with the quality design of the chair, is firm and ready to support and accommodate your featured best doll or favorite teddy bear; or endless hours of a child or grandchild rocking back and forth. Note the fancy trumpet turned double stretchers beneath the seat with gold painted highlighting to the front one. The condition of the chair is very good and the surface is all original with the typical usage wear to the underneath bentwood "rockers" and tops of the arms.
