Vivai del Sud set of twelve bamboo dining chairs, Italy, 1970s
-
Description
Set of twelve chairs made of bent bamboo, wicker, and fabric, from the brand Vivai del Sud, produced in the 1970s.
After establishing themselves in the field of landscape gardening worldwide, with gardens and terraces created from Asia to the United States, the three Di Pierro brothers from Apulia, who founded the brand in the 1960s, introduced Vivai del Sud into the competitive world of furniture design. It was an immediate success.
In the mid-1970s, despite the economic crisis that led to a general decline in consumer spending, Vivai del Sud's furniture became highly desired and sought after. From the outset, these expensive pieces, crafted with excellent artisanal quality and high-grade materials, were aimed at a refined and discerning clientele, furnishing verandas, gardens, and fashionable settings.
With a distinctly recognizable style, Vivai del Sud succeeded in breaking down the aesthetic and conceptual barriers between indoor and outdoor spaces by creating a series of furnishings that could be placed both in gardens and apartments. This was made possible by the unique concept of their designs. The materials used include bamboo, rattan, wicker, and malacca, along with inserts of glass, fabric, and metal. The natural raw materials were tamed and adapted to urban elegance through a clean, classic design with substantial volumes. The underlying opulence typical of the era's furnishings was tempered by the somewhat languid charm of wicker and bamboo.
The furniture often features perfectly geometric panels, with surfaces characterized by a decorative texture composed of successive rattan elements, almost evoking the draping of fabric. Such is the case with this set of twelve bent bamboo chairs, featuring a tall and imposing backrest, where various materials come together under the careful control of a design that subtly evokes ideal tropical landscapes while firmly maintaining its urban vocation.
A set of similar chairs represents the great excellence of Italian craftsmanship and stands as a testament to a period in design history that still excites and engages.
