  • Description
This is a rare signed “Butaque” arm chair designed by William Spratling and produced in his workshop in Taxco, Mexico in the 1930’s. It was handmade of Mexican sabino wood and leather with brass nails. This Butaque chair is branded with the Spratling “WS” monogram and “Taxco”. Known for his furniture, tableware, flatware and jewelry, he often combined his hand crafted silver pieces with shell, copper and native Mexican woods and gemstones. William Spratling’s unique blending of traditional Mexican Colonial and Pre-Columbian designs with modern forms have created a place for him amongst the Masters of 20th Century Modern Silver world wide. Numerous books have been written either by or about him and even a film, “The Man From New Orleans”, was made about William Spratling in 1948.
