Dutch Rococo Revival 1890s Bombé Vitrine Display Cabinet with Carved Medallion
-
Description
A Dutch walnut Rococo Revival bombé vitrine from the late 19th century, with glass doors and single drawer. Created in the Netherlands during the last decade of the 19th century, this wooden vitrine, adorned with a bonnet type pediment, features exquisite lines reminiscent of the Rococo era that spread throughout Europe during the 18th century. The oval medallion is carved with a lady's profile, similar to a cameo and topped with a bow and foliage motifs. Two carved moldings, including a bead-and-reel frieze, finish up the décor of this upper section. Two glass doors, flanked with canted sides open to reveal four inner shelves, offering ample opportunities for decorative objects to be displayed. The lower section, marked by its bombé shape, is comprised of a long drawer with central escutcheon and lateral handles. The side posts are adorned with bows (echoed from the crest) from which delicate garlands are falling. The sinuous skirt is adorned in its center with a carved urn draped with a swag, creating a harmonious visual balance. The ensemble is raised on two ball-and-claw feet in the front and two straight feet in the back. The delicacy of the lines combined with the lovely patina and carved décor make this Dutch walnut vitrine circa 1890 an excellent choice for any living room or foyer.
