French 18th Century Louis XV Style Commode
-
Description
A gorgeous French mahogany commode from the 18th century, Louis XV in style, with transitional features like narrow proportions and brass hardware to complement many interior decorating tastes. The dark gray marble top is original, as evidenced by the chisel marks and expected patina of an 18th century antique, the stone is shaped to fit the commode base in contoured corners and finished with an ogee profile along the edge. Note that the stone is not fixed to the top allowing it to be pushed flat against a wall when baseboards are present therefore eliminating any gap in between. Below, a stack of three generously proportioned drawers exhibits elegant, hand-carved motifs and fluting that defines the facade and side panels, as typical of the period. All three drawers are easy to open with large brass ring pulls characterized by studded texture and topped with a dainty bow. Escutcheon plates over the keyholes are equally dimensional and textured, repeating the bow & beaded motif in the cartouche. No key is present. A swelled apron undulates across the bottom, transitioning into short legs with curling feet to suggest a classic cabriole. Cleaned and polished with a French paste wax, this antique commode is ready for your interior. Please view the detailed images for the current condition and unique features.
