French 19th Century Empire Walnut & Marble Top Buffet
-
Description
A monumental French Empire buffet made of figured walnut in a rich auburn hue, coordinating with the dark marble top surface for a classic & Neoclassical look. The original marble slab shows pockets of red and blue marbleization under a dense web of dark gray veining. Below are two drawers in the apron that retain working locks behind swan-motif escutcheons, sharing a key of ornate rococo design. Pilasters to the left and right incorporate busts of noble caryatids, cast in gilt bronze, including their bare feet at the base. The two paneled doors repeat the swan escutcheons as the drawers, each with their own keys to secure the cabinets inside. Both sides of the case–divided in the middle to create two separate zones–offer a deep shelf (approximately 36”W x 21”D) for generous storage capacity in a dining room or living room. Massive front feet carved to resemble menacing paws lift the case from the floor. Cleaned, tightened, and polished with a French paste wax – ready for your interior. Please view the detailed images to see the wonderful features and antique condition of this handsome Empire case piece.
