George II Red Japanned Coffer or Chest
-
Description
This a George II/George III Chest or Trunk that retains its original red Japanned surface. The chest features a molded lid typically found in George II/ early George III coffers. The is composed of two drawers over bracket feet with the trunk section positioned over the drawers. The raised japanning depicts a village scene to the front of the chest and a more refined scene to the top panel. This chest has not been restored and its original surface is intact. The left front bracket foot has lost its lower third, with only the interior block remaining. We are currently debating whether to carry out minimal restorations to the red lacquer and the left bracket foot.
