Description
This well composed and materially stunning Art Deco Bookcase/Cabinet by Gilbert Rohde in East Indian Laurel for the Herman Miller Company- Model No. 344 originates from the United States, Circa 1940. . Composed in a distinctive cut of East Indian Laurel with a wavy grain and unique hue, the material is beautifully finished and constructed with extreme care and attention. The right hand side of the Bookcase is left open, with a chrome rod penetrating through the central shelf adding support and intrigue, also tying together the Rounded Chrome and Black lacquer Drawer pulls on the lowest section of the cabinet. Utilizing minimal geometry and intelligently designed asymmetrical motifs, this shelf exemplifies in full force the European Art Deco influences Gilbert Rhode picked up during his studies and travels, which he brought back to the Herman Miller Company as their saving grace during a period of change in the market. He modernized and held a vision for the emergent needs and desires of Americans and their interior decor. This Bookcase/Cabinet remains highly modern and will serve perfectly in a wide array of settings and spaces, from Art Deco to Mid-Century Modernist and Contemporary Interiors.
