Description
Important and Extremely Rare William and Mary Pollard Oak and Walnut Chest of Drawers, Circa 1680-1700. England
This Is an important and extremely rare chest of drawers from the William and Mary period that exemplifies English craftsmanship from the period. The chest features a pollard oak, quarter-veneered top with ovolo-mouldings and walnut crossbanding, resting above two short and three graduated long drawers. Each drawer is veneered in carefully selected sections of pollard oak, framed by walnut banding and separated by cross-grain walnut D-mouldings. Remarkably, the chest retains all of its original hardware, including detailed drop handles, floral backplates, and its distinctive lion and horse escutcheons.
The sides are equally striking, veneered in choice cuts of figured walnut and further framed with walnut banding. The chest is raised on an oak ogee moulding and supported by solid oak bun feet.
It should be noted that this is a remarkable chest that has endured three centuries while retaining all of its original brass hardware. It is exceptionally well-proportioned, visually stunning, and boasts a rich colour and patination. Very few examples from the period are known to feature such exquisite veneering in select cuts of pollard oak.
