    The top having a double domed and molded broken arched pediment with three turned gilt finials above a pair of shaped arched bevelled mirror doors with applied twice bevelled border glasses in walnut frames, and gilt and penwork arabesque corner hasps and applied gilt and penwork key escutcheons. The doors which are backed by figured walnut panels open to adjustable shelves above an arrangement of eight figured drawers and two pull-out candle slides. The slant front desk section has twin book-matched burl walnut veneers with feather banding and crossbanding and a double moulded frame enclosing an arrangement of nine drawers and six cubby holes above two short drawers; the lower section with three long graduated drawers on ball and bracket feet. Retaining the original brasses, locks, keys and paper drawer labels. English circa 1720 Provenance: Made for and acquired from Walton Hall, Derbyshire

    This bespoke piece was ordered for the owner of Walton Hall who was a ship's captain. It features pull out loper supports and hinges specially designed to enable the fall front to be opened to either a horizontal position or slanted down at an angle so the user could write standing up as was done at sea. Four drawers retain the original labels "Shaving Things," "Waistcoats," "Waistcoats" and "Old Coats, Etc.".
