Tall Case Clock by John Gottleib Eberman of Lancaster, Pennsylvania

Price Upon Request
  • Description
Gottlieb Eberman was part of the Eberman dynasty of clockmakers in late 18th and early 19th century Lancaster. He was the second son of John Eberman, Sr. a blacksmith and soap maker and step-brother to clockmaker John Eberman, Jr. whose children Jacob and Joseph and grandson, George continued the family tradition of clockmaking. This case is one of only a handful of Lancaster cases known with applied carving. A desk with identical carving and proportions from Lancaster is known (see image below). Another clock with applied carving in the tympanum by Gottlieb Eberman is pictured in Wood and Kramer (see Literature below). The thin, separated columns on the hood signal an awareness of the new Federal style.
