A Rare American Gilded Age "Pompeiian" Bronze & Marble Neo-Classical Table
-
Description
A Rare American Gilded Age Bronze & Marble Neoclassical (Neo-Grec) Table.
Cast and carved with winged ram’s head finials with trailing ivy leaf and berry decorated supports on hoofed feet. The cross stretchers joined by palmette capped rope twist supports with central stylized rosette.
The Pompeiian Style in the American Gilded Age was made famous by the Herter Bros, and was included in two of their most renowned commissions. They furnished the residences of American millionaires J. Pierpont Morgan and William H. Vanderbilt in this style. The Rose was a perennially popular motif of their design repertoire and its roots in the French Second Empire are discussed on pg. 45 of the major work on the subject, referenced below.
The Illustrations of The W.H. Vanderbilt commissions show two versions of this singular cloven foot, one on chairs and one on a pair of center tables with winged figurative finials, the medium of which is at present unclear.
The German-born brothers became sought after custom furniture makers and society decorators during the Gilded Age. Sadly few of the pieces are signed as the paper labels of the firm have not stood the test of time. -
