11737 A REMARKABLE MAHOGANY AND BOXWOOD INLAID CASKET ON STAND. Origin Uncertain, Possibly English. Circa 1820. Overall: Width: 21” (53.3 cm); Depth 15” (38 cm); Height: 31 ½” (80 cm); Casket Alone: Width: 17 5/8? (44.7 cm); Depth: 11” (27.9 cm); Height: 7 3/8” (18.7cm).
Of mahogany, boxwood, solid ebony, cedar. In two parts; the casket with boxwood inlays representing strap hinges, corner mounts, lock plates etc. Each corner with inlaid monogram CR. The hinged top opening to reveal a pair of cedar-lined compartments. The gothic arched stand with chevron pattern inlaid legs. the whole raised on four zoomorphic carved ebony feet.
This remarkable mahogany and boxwood casket on stand is decorated with marquetry made to represent straps and mounts as would be seen in brass applied to Regency writing boxes.
The original stand is of highly inventive Gothik inspiration, and inlaid in a very unusual chevron pattern. Its solid ebony feet of zoomorphic design are of extremely fine quality.
Each corner is inlaid with the monogram ‘CR‘. -
