  • Description
A unique pollard oak and walnut George II 18th century kneehole desk with brushing slide concealing two secret compartments, circa 1730-1740. England
The cross-grain ovolo moulded top is veneered in four book-matched sections of the very finest cuts of pollard oak, feather and crossbanded in walnut.
The six oak-lined drawers are veneered in pollard oak, feather and crossbanded in walnut, each bearing original locks and, gilt-brass plate handles. Similarly, the central pollard oak, feather and crossbanded cupboard retains the original shaped H-hinges and escutcheon below the hidden frieze drawer. Once the wooden bolts have been released from the cupboard, the cupboard can then be pulled forward and removed to reveal two hidden compartments stowed behind.
Each side is veneered in book-matched hand-cut sections of walnut.
Raised on the original bracket feet.

    Literature
The desk, though more accomplished, closely relates to a labelled example by Elizabeth Bell, illustrated in ‘Early Georgian Furniture 1715-1740’ by Adam Bowett, page 123, plate 3:56.
Elizabeth Bell succeeded her husband Henry in 1740 and her son Phillip succeeded her in or before 1758. They worked in the foremost region for fine furniture production in the late 17th and early 18th century, St Pauls Churchyard, London.
