Center Table with Marble Top Attributed to Pottier and Stymus, New York
-
Description
Rosewood, marquetry of various woods; Secondary woods: tulip poplar, oak or ash, gilding, gilt brass, bronze. Top: Marble.
Customer name "Buell" followed by 36373 marked on top underneath the marble.
The center table exhibits design elements and craftsmanship typical to the workshops of New York City during the latter half of the 19th century such as Pottier & Stymus or Leon Marcotte.
The stylized anthemion marquetry apron, the unusual "Turnbridge" marquetry band above the trumpet leg and the choice inset marble top fit neatly into the criterion for any number of prestigious New York workshops. The customer name "Buell" written in ink indicating a custom order from the workshop is seen on documented furniture from Pottier and Symus as well as a 5-digit number. Other contemporary New York companies employed similar client identification name and numbers, however, not in this particular way. (Research provided by David Petrovsky)
