Emilio Martelli Inlayed Black Marble Round Table Florence Italy 1950s
-
Description
Emilio Martelli black marble coffee table created in Florence Italy in the early 1950s.
His inlay of the ribbon, the quill pen and roll of sealing wax created using a stone composite technique Marmoridea or Scagliola popularized in the 17th century to replace the very costly craft of inlaying with real marble or other stone.
The fan box, the cards and the sheets of parchment are slate inlays as noted on the label.
Emilio Martelli was one of handful of 20th Century artists who revived the use of Marmoridea or Scagliola after World War II.
I can imagine this tableaux being based on a table set in the dressing room or private chambers of a 17th Century Countess at the court of the Medici.
There is much that is distressed on the table's insets which adds to its charm. The marble top has been cleaned and waxed and the bronze legs polished,
The legs and support frame of gilded iron are all stamped Italy and each of the four mounting points for the leg are individually identified with one to four dots.
The table is in good condition with the noted distressed areas. (please look at all of the attached photos and contact me with any questions)). -
