Genaro Alvarez Six Piece Butterfly Mosaic Cocktail Table Mexico 1950s
-
Description
Six Piece Studio Mosaic table by Genaro Alvarez composed of intricate inlaid glass mosaic designs of 6 butterflies, on six triangular, interchangeable mahogany bases created at the Genaro Alvarez's Studio in Mexico City in the 1950s.
Alvarez studied under artists Carlos Ruano Llopis and Diego Rivera.
Employing a style he called symbolic expressionism.Alvarez was commissioned to do large murals in Mexico as well as a major commissions in Chicago, Kansas City and other cities in the United States. He did murals in private men's clubs along the the California Coast.
This table's mosaic is composed of a variety of glass tile with the most dramatic being a ribbon of gold mirror glass tile winding between butterflies floating within a white background of scattered light blue, green, crème, pumpkin, gold and white Terrazzo with multicolored butterflies all add to this sophisticated design work.
Each of the six triangular tables is edged in polished brass with brass legs measuring 23.5 by 23.5 by 23.5 inches.
I have photographed the table in a variety of configurations and as a stacked grouping.
It is intentionally modular, stackable and very versatile in its design.
From Don Shoemaker dot com. "One artist that was recognized for his mosaic furniture creations is Genaro Alvarez. The Genaro Alvarez Studio, (located in Mexico City) was known for its mosaic work in murals and floor designs as well as decorative furnishings such as lamps, trays and furniture using various types of natural rocks, semi-precious stones and glass mosaic, and his work is all handmade. Genaro’s claim to fame was that he had developed a new concept on the manipulation of glass mosaic as an art expression. In the late 1950’s Alvarez was awarded the commission for the mosaic floor for the Hallmark Gift & Card Shop in Kansas City, Missouri. He became very popular and well-known among American collectors."
The 6 pieced table is in very good condition as photographed. -
