George I Gilt and Gesso Marble Top Table
-
Description
Very fine George I period console table with richly carved gesso retaining traces of gilding and having strapwork and foliate design in the manner of Gumley and Moore.
The present table base is very similar to one supplied by James Moore and John Gumley for the Prince of Wales bed chamber at Hampton Court Palace in 1715, and, like that table, probably had a gesso carved top originally. The Hampton Court Palace table was the only piece of furniture lost in the fire of 1986.
Later marble top.
