Style of Gordon & Jane Martz Solid Oak Inlaid Smalti Glass Tiles Mosaic, 1970s
-
Description
This coffee table was designed and handbuilt by Kurt G Kurtis, a listed painter and craftsman, and is very large. At over 70 inches long, its heft not only lies in its size but also its materials. It is made of solid oak slabs with solid oak legs, and its surface is partially inlaid with expertly patterned smalti glass tiles. Each less than an inch in size, they are placed in a warm and pleasant pattern. This table features a warm stain on the oak that complements the glass very well. It also features a branded signature on the top of a leg, simply marked KGK, a staple of orther Kurtis items, including his paintings.
Condition is good. Table sits flat and is stable. No tiles missing or loose. No structural damage. Fabulous vintage and original condition. All the original tiles and original grout are 100% intact.
Provenance: I purchased this table from the original homeowners in upstate New York. They knew Mr. Kurtis personally, and had a number of his paintings alongside this coffee table. -
