This very rare side table was produced by Hero de Groot in Bodegraven, The Netherlands, in the early 1920s. The design was documented in the company's catalog from that time.
The striking design is characterized by a three-legged base made of solid mahogany, with each leg ending in a foot featuring an elongated, conical shape crafted from solid Macassar wood. The central column, where the legs meet, is adorned with ring-shaped moldings and culminates in a carved finial detail in solid Macassar wood. The circular top, with a slightly raised edge, is also crafted from mahogany.
The shape, material, and craftsmanship of the table are exemplary of the Amsterdam School movement. Originating in the Dutch capital in the 1920s, this unique style is rooted in Expressionist architecture and draws certain elements from Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) and Art Deco aesthetics.
The table is in very good original condition, with only minor signs of wear consistent with age and use.
