This lowboy was originally japanned, as remnants of a black background are on the tops of the drawer fronts. The inscription “Scottow/W Randle” appears on the backboard.
Reference: This lowboy is discussed in Michael Flanigan, American Furniture from the Kaufman Collection, number 17, page 50 in relation to a japanned high chest of drawers.
