  • Description
Upon hearing the words “Mid-Century Modern”, many people conjure up images of sleek furniture from the 1950s and 1960s. In reality, the style is not simply an exercise in nostalgia, it is this dining table: uncluttered, timeless, cosy, with an impeccable quality of both the material and the craftsmanship.

Modernism in most of Europe represented a break with the traditional past: design-wise, furnishings were often a rejection of Victorian, Colonial, and other historical influences, especially the pseudo-historical use of ornamentation. In comparison, furniture from the mid-century era is generally more pared-down, smaller in scale, and uncluttered with unnecessary elements: on this front, the movement shared qualities with the efforts of the Bauhaus designers’ vehement rejection of ornamentation. This dining table is delightfully minimalistic, relying entirely on its material. Wood is and has been the most essential material for furniture makers for numerous reasons, and one is its indisputable natural beauty. The large round tabletop shows off the variety of patterns and grain of the individual pieces joined together. The four square legs are lightly splayed, keeping functionality at the structure’s core. Their clear straight lines combined with the top’s roundness creates tension that is further complemented by the design’s overall minimalism. The beautiful grain and pattern of the wood gives this dining table a natural, stylish look that is always in fashion. The visible screws on the structure under the tabletop are also wonderful details and show the quality of the work of the cabinetmaker who gave this model personality through his craftsmanship.

The imperfections of the wood and the simple, functional design makes this table stand out with a timeless appeal. Its light colour makes it easy to adapt to almost any interior, and the design is perfect to add that coveted mid-century flair.
