Rare Cherrywood Walnut Rectangular Table by Paolo Buffa
-
Description
Paolo Buffa for Serafino Arrighi rare and exquisite rectangular table with polished cherrywood veneered tabletop, decorative hand-carved diamond or pyramid-shaped square wood panels on tabletop edges, resting on walnut base with sculptural and elegant curved crisscross legs. The tabletop has a gorgeous veneer with a pronounced cherry grain pattern and modernist pyramid-shaped wood sides, a characteristic design element found on other Buffa furniture pieces of this period. It's paired with a more subtle walnut base with soft curves in the legs which contrast with the sharp angular lines of the entire tabletop. This versatile table can be used as a dining table, desk, or any other kind of table and is truly a masterpiece in midcentury Italian design.
This extraordinary table design reflects the sophistication and craftsmanship that Buffa's highly detailed furniture from the 1930s and 1940s was known for. A similar example of this table is featured in the drawings of Buffa's cabinetmaker Serafino Arrighi - the last two images depict these drawings.
