Philip & Kelvin LaVerne Chan Coffee Table 1960
-
Description
From the Historical Civilization Series depicting the past civilizations of China, Greece, and Egypt, Chan is among the most recognized motifs in the artistry of Philip and Kelvin LaVerne. Also applied to console, side and tea tables, the Chan motif which tells the story of Chinese peasants bringing a sacred gift to the Emperor's child was most often seen in full on coffee tables. Here the tale is retold in intricately carved, patinated bronze and pewter relief and adorned with hand painted, brightly colored enamels. The piece bares LaVernes sought after signature patina, the result of chemical reactions that occurred when the bronze and pewter works were buried in a proprietary blend of soils kept in the basement of their workroom. This treatment, completely unique to their work, resulted in the rich, aged patina that defines the art of Philip and Kelvin LaVerne.
