Description
Two carved wood, marble and onyx Chinese tables
Chinese, Early 20th Century
Height 77cm, diameter 51cm
Intricately carved and elegantly formed, the two Chinese tables feature round tabletops inlaid with brightly coloured marble and interestingly veined onyx. The frames of the specimen stone tabletops are carved with floral patterns, one with a richer design and the other with a more paired-down composition.
The tabletops are mounted on a central column which is further mounted with two platforms positioned in a cross-formation. Each tier opens on four sides and its panels are adorned with symmetrically patterned galleries. Both tables are supported on three legs, each terminating with a ball and claw motif. According to Chinese mythology, the claws represent the dragon (Emperor) who is protecting wisdom and purity (in the form of a ball) from being stolen by evil forces.
The highest quality craftsmanship was employed to produce the two tables, and they would form an exceptional addition to the appropriate interior space. -
