Description
Paul Edmond Flato was considered the first celebrity jeweler, having designed important jewelry for the likes of Mae West, Joan Crawford, Ginger Rogers, Katherine Hepburn, and many others. He was well known for his flamboyant and whimsical designs with many of his pieces finding their way on screen worn by his clients. Born in Texas, he showed interest in jewel design as early as 10 years of age. After attending the University of Texas at Austin, he moved to New York City in the early 1920s and became a watch salesman. He opened his own upstairs atelier at One East 57th St at the corner of 5th Avenue. He was soon considered one of the best jewelers in New York, with his creative and imaginative work compared to European jewelers. Among the designers he employed were the future stars David Webb, George W. Headley and Fulco di Verdura. In 1937 he opened a second store in Beverly Hills, CA .
