Louis Valtat

French
Valtat studied at the Academie Julian in Paris, and spent a great deal of time in the south of France. Early in his career he made the acquaintance of Bonnard and Vuillard; later he also met Renoir, Signac and Cross. His first works were Pointillist in character, but about 1895 he began to use pure strong color to construct his shapes. He was one of the first painters to adapt this approach, which through Matisse and Marquet developed into the Fauvist movement. After 1913 Valtat settled in Paris and dropped out of the public gaze. His work is now being recognized as an important contribution to the development of modern art.
