Alessandro Mendini
Italian, 1931 - 2019
Alessandro Mendini (16 August 1931 – 18 February 2019) was a distinguished Italian designer and architect who left an indelible mark on the realms of Italian, Postmodern, and Radical design. His contributions extended beyond his artistic endeavors, encompassing influential roles at Casabella, Modo, and Domus magazines.
Mendini's design ethos was characterized by a profound fascination with amalgamating diverse cultures and forms of expression. He traversed the domains of graphics, furniture, interiors, paintings, and architecture, while also authoring numerous articles and books. Renowned for his spirited involvement as a jury member in architectural competitions for emerging talents, he also imparted his wisdom as a lecturer at the University of Milan.
Born in Milan, Mendini earned his architecture degree from Politecnico di Milano in 1959 and honed his craft alongside Marcello Nizzoli. His tenure as the editor-in-chief of Domus magazine from 1979 to 1985 marked a transformative period in modern design. Iconic works like the Proust Armchair and the Groninger Museum epitomized his embrace of postmodernism, revitalizing design with humanistic values amidst an era dominated by commercialism and functionalism. Collaborations with esteemed brands including Cartier, Gufram, and Hermès underscored his influence and versatility.
