Danish, 1916 - 1986
Peter Hvidt (1916-1986) was a Danish furniture designer and architect known for his elegant, functional and innovative designs. He trained as a cabinet maker before attending the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, where he studied under the famous furniture designer Kaare Klint. In 1942, he founded his own design studio with fellow designer Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen, and the two collaborated on many successful furniture designs. Their work combined traditional Danish craftsmanship with modern industrial production techniques, and was characterized by clean lines, simplicity and functionality. Some of their most iconic designs include the Ax chair, the Pluto chair and the France chair. Hvidt also designed interiors for several important public buildings, including the Royal Danish Embassy in Washington DC and the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. He was awarded numerous design awards throughout his career and his furniture designs continue to be highly sought after today.
