Louis Majorelle
French, 1859 - 1926
Louis Majorelle was a French artist, ironworker, furniture designer born in Toul, France in 1859. Louis was the son of a cabinetmaker and trained at Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Francois Millet. Majorelle worked at his family workshop in Nancy and moved the focus from 18th century reproductions to developing Art Nouveau. His modern workshop used both machine and hand labor-helping him to increase production and decrease cost. Majorelle created a large volume of products between 1900 and 1904-the furniture varied between stylistic themes, botanical motifs and other styles. Following World War, I, Majorelle continued to produce furniture in a more modified style as Art Nouveau was replaced by Art Deco style. Following Majorelle’s death in 1926, his pupil Alfred Levy managed his studio. Louis Majorelle furniture continues to be highly sought by collectors and dealers today.
