Elkington & Co.

British
Elkington & Co. is a British silverware manufacturer, known for its innovative and high-quality designs. The company was founded in 1836 by George Richards Elkington, who was a pioneer in the development of electroplating technology.

Prior to the invention of electroplating, silverware was made by hand using traditional techniques, which were time-consuming and expensive. Elkington's breakthrough allowed silver to be plated onto other metals, such as copper or nickel, creating a less expensive and more durable alternative to solid silver.

Elkington & Co. quickly became a leader in the field of silverware, producing a wide range of objects, including cutlery, tea sets, and decorative pieces. The company's designs were often inspired by historical styles, such as Renaissance or Baroque, but were also influenced by contemporary tastes, particularly in the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau movements.

Elkington & Co. received numerous awards and honors for its work, including a Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria, and the company's pieces were highly sought-after by collectors and connoisseurs. Today, Elkington & Co. is owned by the British silverware company Carrs Silver, which continues to produce high-quality silverware and decorative objects using traditional techniques.
