Thomasville Furniture Industries, once a key player in the furniture manufacturing sector, was based in Thomasville, North Carolina. The company had a vast network, with dedicated galleries in over 400 retail stores and 30 exclusive Thomasville Home Furnishing outlets showcasing its products. From 1995 onward, it operated as a subsidiary of Furniture Brands International, headquartered in Clayton, Missouri. However, in 2013, Heritage Home Group acquired the majority of Furniture Brands International's assets, leading to the difficult announcement in 2014 that Thomasville Furniture would cease its operations, signaling the end of an era for the local industry.
Meanwhile, the Thomasville Cabinetry line, produced by MasterBrand Cabinets, Inc.—a subsidiary of Fortune Brands Home and Security—carried on the legacy. These cabinets are made in various North American facilities and are exclusively available at The Home Depot. Notably, brands like Schrock Cabinetry from Illinois also manufacture products under the Thomasville Cabinetry name.
A prominent symbol of the city, the Big Chair, an 18-foot replica of a Duncan Phyfe design, has stood as a testament to Thomasville’s rich chair-making tradition since its original installation in 1922 (rebuilt in 1951). It remains a beloved landmark, representing the success of both the chair company and the town, which is often referred to as "Chair City."
The story of Thomasville Furniture began in 1904 with the founding of the Thomasville Chair Company, initially producing between 500 and 1,000 chairs daily. In 1907, the company was acquired by Thomas Jefferson Finch and Charles F. Finch from Randolph County. Over the years, it expanded through key acquisitions, including Lambeth Furniture in 1932 and a merger with B.F. Huntley Furniture in 1961, ultimately forming Thomasville Furniture Industries.
The company underwent several ownership changes, becoming part of Armstrong World Industries in 1968, and later being sold to Interco (which transformed into Furniture Brands International) in 1995. In 2011, it relocated its showroom from Thomasville to the International Home Furnishings Center.
A pivotal moment came in 2014 when Heritage Home Group announced the closure of all operations on March 21, resulting in the loss of 84 jobs in Thomasville. Despite this, Heritage Home Group maintained a presence in the city while planning for its new headquarters in High Point.
In 2017, the company restructured into three groups, creating Thomasville & Co. to include the Thomasville, Drexel, and Henredon brands. Following this, plans emerged to sell Thomasville & Co. as a whole. On August 31, 2018, Authentic Brands Group, based in New York City and known for revitalizing struggling businesses, placed a bid to acquire Thomasville & Co.
