Spode
British
Founded in 1770 by Josiah Spode, Spode is an English brand of pottery, ceramics & homegoods based in Stoke-on-Trent. Generally considered Stafforshire pottery the brand is known specifically for their bone china formula. Other bone potters include Minton, Davenport & Coalport.
Spode was known for its high-quality porcelain and earthenware, and was particularly famous for its blue and white transferware designs. These designs featured detailed illustrations of landscapes, floral patterns, and other decorative motifs, which were printed onto the ceramic surface using a transfer printing process.
In addition to transferware, Spode also produced a range of other pottery, including bone china and jasperware. The company was highly innovative, and was responsible for many important developments in the field of ceramic production, including the invention of bone china.
Today, Spode pottery is highly prized by collectors and is considered an important part of the history of English ceramics. Examples of Spode's work can be found in museum collections around the world, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
