American furniture manufacturer Steelcase started in 1912 as the Metal Office Furniture Company. Their first patent was a metal wastebasket designed for safety in crowded cities where fire could spread quickly. Throughout the 20th century, Steelcase Furniture became known for the desks, sofas, chairs and stools. Vintage Steelcase furniture remains popular worldwide.
