Jessica Rice

Belgian, 1941 - 2016
Jessica Rice, born in Antwerp, Belgium, draws inspiration from her early years in Central Africa, where she first explored painting with oils. Influenced by the angularity of African art and her father's photography, Rice's talent flourished in the vibrant tropical surroundings. Her early works leaned towards cubist-nativism, showcasing a raw talent unfettered by formal training.

After relocating to San Francisco in 1959, Rice continued to refine her artistic skills. Graduating from the San Francisco Academy of Art in 1964, she received the prestigious Flax Scholarship. Balancing a career in commercial art in San Francisco and New York, Rice pursued her passion for oil painting, finding personal satisfaction in her artistic expression.

Settling in Los Angeles in the early 1970s, Rice dedicated herself entirely to painting. Her style, influenced by early 20th-century avant-garde movements, blends primitive, lush colors with strong, distinctive brush strokes. Her paintings often depict native Flemish landscapes, family gatherings, and domestic scenes, offering a romanticized take on social realism. Working part of the year in Mexico, Rice's artistry extends to fauve-cubist beach scenes, carnivals, and street vendors, captivating collectors worldwide. Trigg Ison Fine Art is proud to exclusively represent the exquisite paintings of Jessica Rice, showcasing her unique blend of nostalgia and imagination.
