Pair of Lounge Chairs by Donald Deskey For Radio City Music Hall
-
Description
This original pair of lounge chairs were designed by Donald Deskey for Radio City Music Hall, NYC in 1932. They are unique handmade chairs that have been fully restored and recovered in keeping with the original pallet in a beautiful vintage light sand leather. The comfort level is extraordinary and the mohogany detailing is unique. At age 35, Donald Deskey’s commission to oversee all aspects of the interior of Radio City Music Hall was a triumph. In August of 1932 , Deskey is quoted as saying, ”We hope to impress the customers by sheer elegance, not by overwhelming them with ornament”. These chairs are an excellent example of this vision. They retain their original Radio City inventory labels. The last photo shows the Library reading Room of Radio City Music Hall in 1947. The arms and part of the seat of one chair is visible in the lower left corner. When one absorbs the magnificence of this historic building, it is unimaginable that it was only 14 months between the ground braking in September, 1931 and the opening on December 27,1932.
