"Santa Claus Walking" Wind-Up Toy, Circa 1890
-
Description
This rare and all original walking Santa Claus wind-up toy was manufactured in about 1890 and is probably of French manufacture, due to the lead feet and hand painted composition head, which was typical of French toy makers in that period.
It operates by winding up the attached clockwork key in his back and upon release, Santa walks along. It works fine.
Note: Short one minute video showing operation of the toy is available.
The felt clothing and toy bag are completely original and in excellent condition. A tree is attached to his right hand. The hand painted face is completely intact and in almost 99% all original paint with no touch-up. The age is indicated by the crazing of the paint and composition, which is emblematic of a 100 plus year old toy.
Dimensions: 9" high x 5" wide x 3 1/2" deep.
Note: The companion piece to this toy, undoubtedly made during the same period and by the same manufacturer, is the "Walking Rabbit " which I also have for sale and is listed on my website. -
