Norman Wilkinson
British
Norman Wilkinson (1878-1971) was a British artist and illustrator known for his maritime paintings, posters, and designs. He is particularly famous for developing the concept of "dazzle camouflage" during World War I, a technique that involved painting warships with bold and contrasting geometric patterns to make them harder to target by enemy submarines.
In addition to his wartime contributions, Wilkinson was a prolific artist and illustrator throughout his career. He painted seascapes, landscapes, and portraits, and designed posters and advertisements for clients such as the London Underground and the Orient Line.
Wilkinson was also a member of the Royal Academy of Arts, and his work is held in the collections of many major museums and galleries, including the Imperial War Museum and the National Maritime Museum in London.
