Beginning this week, a constellation of blue-chip galleries in New York will exhibit contemporary and classical work from the Far East. Among those participating in this ten-day extravaganza: China 2000 Fine Art, Kaikodo LLC, Laurence Miller Gallery, Joan B. Mirvis Ltd., M. Sutherland Fine Art and the Tina Kim Gallery.
One of the highlights is Lee Ufan: Ceramics, at Pace Gallery, which has the distinction of being the first exhibition organized by the artist that is dedicated to this medium. In Untitled (2016), a swirl of blue, yellow and orange is a dynamic cyclone on the verge of being torn asunder by centrifugal force. In his prints and posters, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) observed the hedonism of the Parisian nightlife during the Belle Époque. This is a landscape populated by swindlers, flâneurs (interlopers), prostitutes and acrobatic dancers. The advertisements produced by this absinthe-guzzling artist, who died of a stroke when he was just 36, are notable for their bold lines, lurid colors and throbbing energy.
The exhibition was organized by Sarah Suzuki, Curator in the Department of Drawings and Prints at the Museum of Modern Art, in New York.
