Description
The desirable small size, original four-color paint decoration, use of applied half spindles and skillful joinery are the highlights of this diminutive Dutch cupboard from Berks County. The original painted surface reveals the attention to detail the maker applied to the decoration of the cupboard. The original grain painting is visible on the side panels of the cupboard which contrasts with the red of the doors highlighted by an ochre painted molding. The upper interior remains in the original grey over salmon. The hardware is original, as are the pressed glass knobs.
Provenance: Descended in the Ritter Family Berks County, PA, likely purchased by John Ritter (1779-1851). Ritter was born in Exeter township, reared on a farm, and at the age of eighteen went to Reading and entered the office of the newspaper Der Reading Adler to learn the printer's trade. He continued with the Adler office, and in June 1802, became the owner of a half interest in the plant. He was prominent in public affairs, and during President James K. Polk's administration he served (1843-47) as a member of Congress as a Democrat. Mr. Ritter died Nov. 24, 1851, aged seventy-two years. -
