Description
A spectacular Philadelphia mahogany dressing table attributed to the celebrated workshop of cabinetmaker Benjamin Randolph, incorporating the latest fashion of fluid and robust carving attributed to the London emigre carver Hercules Courtney. This table has the finest quality of highly figured mahogany and is further ornamented by its original rococo brass hardware, a rare level of embellishment. One of the finest Philadelphia rococo dressing tables of its type, in excellent condition; several patches to drawers and carved tendrils.
Descended in the Wistar family of Philadelphia from Richard Wistar (1790-1863) and his wife Hannah (1795-1863) to their daughter to Frances Anna Wistar (1835-1913). Frances Wistar married Lewis Allaire Scott (1810-1896); the dressing table descended to their son Alexander Harvey Scott (1867-1940) and his wife Helen (Strothers) Scott (1881-1963). -
