Description
Austrian, 1900–1957, based in Vienna, Austria
Among the most celebrated figures of Austrian modernism and the second in a lineage of Austrian designers now in its fourth generation, Carl Auböck was born the same year his father established the renowned metal workshop he would eventually direct and re-invigorate. As a teenager, he apprenticed in his father’s workshop, learning to manufacture the bronze animal figurines popular in Austria in the early 20th century. He went on to study painting and spent time at the Bauhaus before returning home and taking over the family workshop in 1926. Moving from bronze to brass and figurines to functional art objects—including paperweights, candleholders, and book and magazine racks—he approached all of his work with a sense of economy and purpose. There are no superfluous elements in Auböck’s exquisitely crafted objects, which are simultaneously restrained and imbued with humor. -
