François Salem
Swiss
Born in Paris and raised in Switzerland, artist François Salem returned to Paris to as a teenager to join Studio Berçot for fashion design. After graduating, he traveled the world, then ventured into costume design for the theater and opera, and stylist for films and commercial work. He discovered his passion for ceramics during a long summer in Anjou in the Loire Valley, and began by making vases and bowls. He quickly gained fame for his unique pieces, which range from large decorative amphorae and dynamic consoles, to sculptural lighting, tables and mirrors. Many of his handcrafted works are inspired by life from the depths of the ocean, materialized by opalescent glazes which give a poetic lightness to utilitarian objects.
