Description
A radiant raised gold and silver metallic embroidered banner from 19th century France. The antique hanging is trimmed in metallic gold galon, with a deep red backing. A raised gold embroidered reliquary rests on raised silver clouds that holds the christogram IHS. In the early days of Christianity, Greek and Roman Christians would don christograms on tombs and vestments that served as a secret code notifying a Christian burial, etc. The letters IHS are an “acronym” for “Jesus Christ”. They are a shortened, shorthand form of Greek letters first seen used AD 312. From behind the silver cloud-shrouded christogram come brilliant raised gold rays. Embroidered wheat and grapevines bearing grapes, the main ingredients in bread and wine, form a wreath around the reliquary. Bread and wine represent the body and blood of Christ and are frequently seen in Catholic and Christian imagery. The banner’s bottom is trimmed in gold metallic fringe that finish this ornate antique textile with an elegant final touch. c.1870.
