American Cast Iron Toy, Oxen Drawn Log on Carriage with Rider, Hubley, Ca 1906

Sold Sold
  • Description
This charismatic turn of the century American cast iron floor toy (children rolled it around on the floor by hand) made by the Hubley Manufacturing Company in Lancaster, Pennsylvania circa 1906, consists of: two oxen pulling a separate carriage with a log mounted atop. Driving the oxen team and sitting on top of the log is a figure of a black man. The toy is in completely all original excellent condition and paint with no touch up or restoration of any kind. Hardly ever found without repaint, repairs, or missing or replaced parts. The four original spoked wheels to the carriage are painted red, the chassis is yellow, while the log is painted green with gold stump highlights. The oxen are realistically painted black with cream colored spots, while the driver is nicely painted in yellow and red with a white straw hat. The entire toy is of cast iron and has a beautiful patina in bright paint; rare to find like this since it was subject to rough play. Also difficult to find complete since the driver and log were cast separately from the casting of the chassis and oxen.
This toy is not to be confused with the later horse drawn version by Kenton circa 1930.
