Description
This is a large-scale three-dimensional work by Texas Artist Douglas Cartmel. This work is inspired by the artist's swiss cross series. The geometry is a nine square equilateral cross folded onto a three-dimensional form to create a volume comprised of sixteen cubes uniform in size. The mathematical concept can be understood by observing the grey cubes in the corners of the work.
The juxtaposition of the sky grey color field in the background with the transparent red oxide drip field is particularly captivating when viewed in person. The subtle scrapes and inclusions throughout the surface add another layer of tension to the painting that speaks to the overall success of the work. -
