A Massive Japanese Arita Presentation Porcelain Plate Meiji Period

$ 6,800
  • Description
    This massive Japanese Arita plate was made in Hizen circa 1890-1910s, at the end of Meiji period by a potter named Takeshige Yoshisuke who was active in Arita kilns. Some potters are known for making very large porcelain plate, likely most for export to the west. This plate was beautifully decorated by an expertly hand. In most blue underglaze, the design has a western perspective of treating the three dimensional space by creation of depth. Framed by cloud-like shapes with traditional auspicious Japanese symbols and patterns, a mostly opened screen was on display with an embedded landscape painting, in which very light colors were used on the far away peaks in the mist. In front of the screen, an ikebana with plum blossoms on the branches echoes the tree branches in the screen. An opened Go box showing the go pieces suggests a scholarly setting and ambience. The plate features a border with linked dimond petals in various size. The back with kiku scrolling border and is signed "Great Nipon Hizennokuni Saga Ken Arita made by Takeshige Yoshisuke".
    Commanding size and presence. Superb craftsmanship. Will make a stunning center display piece. There are some kiln wears and discoloration on the back. It was drilled historically for wall displaying.
