In Studio Greytak’s alligator quartz on smoky quartz base, stout crystal prisms, nearly as broad as they are tall, stand side by side forming a formidable spiritual fortress. The story it tells is one of power and persistence. Epic geological battles marked by rapid swings in temperature and pressure caused the growth of the crystals to stop and start, creating uneven layers that, over time, resemble the geometric patterns on the skin of alligators. It sits on a smooth version of this powerful crystal known for channeling the highest energies. Negativity and stress are neutralized and dispersed by the positivity of smoky quartz.

Alligator quartz practically begs to be touched. The intricate geometry of similarly-shaped crystal facets all aligned in the same direction creates a unique texture-a tactile labyrinth of smooth faces and distinct channels. Even more compelling, some stones are etched with complex and less precise patterns across the facets like an ancient, mysterious language. Smoky quartz begins as clear quartz, usually within granite. Over time, the granite host releases a natural form of energy that changes the atomic structure of the quartz. As a result, smoky quartz crystals range from a pale amber brown to storm-cloud gray to an almost opaque black.

A special variety of smoky quartz called Cairngorm comes from a mountain range of the same name in Scotland. Ancient Druid priests revered the saturated, earthy-colored stones and used them for scrying, healing, and the most sacred of rituals.
